I finally broke down and allowed my oldest to get a facebook-page account. I had the typical reservations about him joining facbook. Ya-know...creepy stalkers, giving and receiving harassment - that sort of thing. We set up his account with the most secure settings and he friended his mother and me so we can monitor his page.

Any suggestions from those of you GCSAAers who have facebook-using-teenagers? What should I keep an eye our for? I'll probably look back on this 5 years from now and realize my paranoia but in the meantime I'll be the "pain-in-arse dad".

I think its being a good dad. Our cpu is in plain sight. My rule is that if there's anything on there you don't want me or mom to see, then we have a problem. I do random checks. I"ve got a 12 yr old daughter addicted to the thing, 15 yr old daughter also on there a fair bit. I'd say all the paranoia is real and the key is the same as the rest of their lives, being an involved parent.

After seeing what my 15 year old cousin posts on her page, I'm not letting my daughter join. Ever.

Being the liberal dufus that I am I just assumed my daughters would behave on Facebook and I was not disappointed. My older daughter was living at college about 45 minutes away and my younger daughter was at home in high school. My older daughter told me that she was a pescetarian (a vegetarian who eats seafood, go figure). One weekend we were going to meet for church and lunch, so I decided to make a pescetarian picnic. I searched on Google for "pescetarian picnic" and located one of their girlfriend's Facebook Page. Apparently this girl went on such a picnic with a boy when she was in Italy! Once I was on her Facebook Page I had access to my daughters'. I gave them both $100 and a sincere thank you!

I would think controlling the amount of time spent on Facebook would be important. Obviously your best control of the content and raising them to be sensible are key but do everything you can to prevent the addiction tendency. I have a some nieces and nephews that are just stupid with the time they spend on it. It almost becomes a substitute for real life to some kids.

How about keeping your college aged employees off it during work hours. It makes me sick sometimes.

I honestly think they lose the skills of actual social interaction in today's world. Nobody actually has to talk to anyone. That isn't good. They are not learning the skill of communicating face to face.

I suspect this is a post that the forum police will pull but I put it up here anyway.

I started a new job this week. I had hoped that I would resurrect my career as a Superintendent but at 50 I have become an endangered species. My new position will allow me to follow my daughter around the country while she continues her softball career at the collegiate level. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to swing the summer trip to the Dominican Republic with the Junior National Team that she is playing on.

I will be traveling throughout the U.S. working with our distribution network and visiting with Superintendents and University Personnel. I would like to make daily posts of news, notes, and nonsense to our Facebook page. I would do mobile uploads, with the Superintendents permission, and post pictures and anecdotes from the sites I visit each day. If I can get enough followers, I will create some type of contest or promotion.

If you have an interest in something like this please like us on Facebook.

Best of luck to you Kerry. Can't see why GCSAA would pull the post.

Look me up when/if you're in Northern California.

Kerry's probably referring to the possibility that this may look like a form of marketing, or advert/product placement.

Slippery slope and all that. He's probably right.

I was on the first web services committee many years ago that created some of the forum policies. They have been updated and modified many times since then but my concern was that the post was "commercial" in nature. It could be interpreted as marketing or advertising, my goal is to utilize web resources like Facebook to share industry information from around the country.

NOW the big question..."Do you guys know how to post video's to facebook?"

Is anyone using Facebook, for your maintenance operations, sucessfully to communicate to your membership. We have a club website which I update weekly but I think updating to a Facebook page would be so much easier. We could almost send daily updates, I've been playing with a page but wanted some feedback on what others are doing before I decide to go live with it.

"Trailer Park Boys" is the best. For those of you who have not watched it, pay your $8 to Netflix and get it. Total entertainment.
