In my office on a Sunday morning, office is in pro-shop so I was overhearing ESPN's article on concussions in football. And then it came to me. 30 plus years ago when I played, you hardly ever heard of concussions as we do now.
All the years I played sports I remember only one boy on any of the teams I played that got a concussion, but that was entirely with head on head contact and not from being slammed to the ground. By the way, those guys were huge and they beat us 45 to 0. How many concussions are coming from the artificial turf as compared to head on head?
Today there are so many artificial turf fields in use that I'm wondering if we were to go back to natural turf and instead of mowing it close and keeping it tight, that it was allowed to be a little high to take away some of the speed that these kids have. If the game is played at a slower speed common sense says there could be less concussions and rarely would there be one from hitting the ground. Those are just some thought I have and yes I've convinced myself to get up with the local high schools here and see if I can give them some helpful advice for their football and baseball fields.
    Have a good one all!

If they're serious about reducing concussions they'll have to go back to leather helmets.

Just make football go back to the days of the ancient Greek wrestlers in what was considered Olympic Games. Make them all play naked! That will definitely cut down on the severity of the hits!

I think you may be onto something about slowing the game day. However, the players today are so much faster, quicker & stronger than 30 years ago. Slowing the field down and essentially making it softer would certainly help but the players have changed dramatically. Its like comparing greenspeeds to 30 years ago. Just not the same.

What was termed getting your bell rung 30 years ago now translates to getting medical attention.

For those that think removing/ reducing some of the equipment will help I submit the following:

Having been around the game of rugby for the last 30 years or so, I can assure you that the desire to knock the snot out of someone is a human condition that exists even in the absense of pads.
