We all know how the usual 5 or 6 big name teams will do but beyond those usual teams, who has some real optimism about their teams this year. San Diego State Aztecs are young but pretty tall, long arms, a bunch of great jumpers and really fast as a team. Last year we couldn't shoot or make critical free throws. If we have cured those problems. they should be at least in the sweet 16 and maybe the final 8. Maybe too young to reach the final four. Hate the NBA so this is my fun basketball season to watch.

Locally our Missouri State team is sparking some interest from a dismal season last year. The freshman seem to be even better then thought.

But the women's team seems the better bet, one of our son's high school friends pick the women's pep band over the men's because they think they will play longer during the season and he will make more money.

    Sandy,

My Spartans should still be good but not quite as good as the last few years but you never know what Izzo might get out of this group. Right now it looks like next year good be really good is the recruits they have committed stay with them.

Not sure anyone else will be completely dominant but it might be Duke is you believe all the hype right now. Still great to have the best sports season of all getting underway!!!

Purdue could be very strong for a change. The Boilers should be dominant in the paint with having two 7+ footers in rotation plus one of the best freshman power forwards in the country. 3 point shooting was suspect last year but should be much better. If they get their shooters up to par and can find some solid point guard play out of their many promising options they could be a contender for the Big 10 title and beyond.

I just hope the way they called the Aztec game isn't an indication of how ref's will try to control roughness in games. Aztecs won but ref's destroyed the pace of the game with all the fouls they called. Sounds like it is the plan for the year to reduce roughness!

18 Threes for Purdue, school record, in 107-79 win over Vermont yesterday. 18 of 36 from beyond the arc. It looks like the 30 second clock will have a huge impact on scoring.

7 foot Senior A.J. Hammons has yet to play due to violating "team rules". Once he gets into the mix look out.

Big 10 freshman of the week Caleb Swanigan has 2 double doubles in 2 games.

They might go somewhere if they can get by Little Rock.

Ouch.... On the other hand I see #1 UNC stumbled against Northern Iowa. It's a long season.

Well, after several games, I have clearly learned that my San Diego State Aztecs are pretty bad. Already lost to several smaller schools. None of the so called talent have shown they can cut it and play consistent. Wait until next year!

Well into the season and still can't figure out my Aztecs. They stink up the court early , losing to teams that are not very good and suddenly they are 10 and 0 in the Mountain West. Question is, have they improved that much or is the Mountain West just simply that bad? At this rate, the Aztecs will make it into the round of 64 and it may take until then to see just which answer it is. They appear to have improved greatly but just don't know?

    Hi Sandy,

Tried this once and it didn't post so I'll try again. The MSU Spartans are playing the same way with some great games followed by losses to teams they should never lose to. Still probably better overall than many expected. I think there is obviously a lot of balance throughout the country this year so March Madness should be quite interesting this year. I really think there are probably 15 or more teams with a real chance to win it all this year.

PS - based upon current plans it looks like the wife is planning for us to make a "donation" out at Barona on Thursday night next week. Loosen up those slots....Please!!!! Thanks!!!
