Good Morning, We bought a used 5040 sand pro that needs a new engine. Problem is no one has one and cannot tell how long it would take to get one.

Now we are looking for alternatives, so does anyone know of a replacement engine for this unit.

    It has a 18hp Briggs model #356447 type 0304

I want to run my thoughts across to get opinions on them. please feel free to answer anything, even if its "your nuts"

After doing some research I am thinking that I might be able to retrofit the same model but a different type engine so the basic block will be the same and I should be able to use any needed outer parts off of my old motor. We have found one that the only differences seems to be the crank shaft is 29/32" longer and it has a higher RPM range of 150rpm. Since that part of the crank goes out the back of the unit (the hydrostat is powered off the front of the motor) and does not connect to anything I do not see this being an issue.

Have any of ya'll retrofit Motor types in order to get one to work?

Seems B&S engines and parts are still in short supply. What happened to your old engine? I suggest keeping it for parts or if you have time or know another local mechanic or engine builder you could rebuild the old one. They really are not that hard to rebuild. Just time consuming.
Make sure the RPM of the new engine match what the machine is supposed to run at, (I believe it is 1750 and 3400). Good luck.

Well, I would rebuild it myself, since I love doing that type mechanical work but since both rods were broke into pieces along with the cam broke in half and the crank completely screwed it would cost me about $1000-$1500 to go through it and make it right if I could get all the parts to be worth the effort. New one costed $1,799. the other one will have some pieces removed for future use (Starter) and trashed.
