Has anyone ever ran across a situation where an assistant (non-degreed) or "right hand man" is paid more in the absence of the Superintendent? I've an older gentleman who recently was re-classified from full-time to seasonal, lost his accrued sick time, lost his vacation, holidays, personal days, etc.

He said he is done running the crew when I am gone.

    Douglas,

When I was at the city we used to have the option to do "out of class" pay which meant if I was going to be gone for more than 5 days my assistant was eligible to get extra pay for covering some of my duties. Was some time ago but I think it was an extra 10% for that time I was gone. It had to be approved by the higher ups and as money got tighter they became a lot more reluctant to approve it unless it was for much more extended time periods. Not even sure if they still have it at all now.

Our city will pay out of title pay if a position above is vacant, It would be at the pay grade of the vacant position in the same step. For example: Our golf course workers get paid at a grade-5 and say our middle step is $15.02 per hour, and they are filling in for a vacant Golf Course Working Leader which is at grade-6, the middle step would be paid at $15.73 per hour.

Now when we had a vacant superintendent position, the person filling in the Golf Course Working Leader position (out of title, because that position was open as well) could not receive the out of title pay for the superintendent position, because the percentage was too high, according to our city's merit rules, so us two other superintendents had to take turns running our course and that one, a month at a time (we figured that would offer the most continuity) would be paid 10% more than our normal for doing the extra work, during the month we would be splitting time between courses, to make it easier on finance and time keeping, they just gave us 5% each month regardless, until that position was filled.

No one get's paid extra just because someone is off for the weekend or on vacation, they didn't even pay someone extra when I was off for a month following surgery. (Luckily it was in the winter)

Hope that explanation was helpful, (and clearer than mud)

I used to have a crew member that would occasionally fill in as a mechanic when needed. His rate of pay increased accordingly for the hours worked in that position.
