How many municipal courses are part of the parks department vs. being their own entity? Curious to know, we have always been our own fund but management is looking to put us with the parks and rec.

Is anyone out there responsible for the care of the parks and the golf course at their municipality? I have been asked about doing this, am considering it for a substantial pay increase. It will also be able to shift half of my compensation away from the golf fund and make our budget look better to the commission.

We are part of a city/county park system. Our 3 golf courses are also an enterprise fund, meaning we are suppose to support ourselves.

We are a separate fund also. Set up as enterprise fund. We are separate from Parks and Rec, however they built their new shop next to mine, and the golf course equipment manager usually services their equipment. 20% of his salary is paid by Parks and Rec.

With new accounting rules in place a few years ago, we get hit with depreciation pretty hard, 20% of gross income.

My budget hasn't changed in 5 seasons. Another lean year....

Yes it is. He retired back in October, we tried to fill the position once, but those that qualified after the interview process didn't take it due to low pay. They are working on that and hopefully it gets reposted soon. It is our crown jewel but does need some detail work, a few of the long time seasonal employees didn't come back along with not getting a full time staff position filled. They have that job posted now.

Our superintendent at the Bill and Payne Stewart course and I have been taking turns down there, actually he has done more as I am finishing my last round of chemo next week.

Wow, best wishes to you Mel! I hope it goes away and stays away.

That is what I had heard, I got a copy of an email sent from the parks director to one of the members about the position. Family is pretty set here or would consider applying for it.

At our place golf is a separate enterprise fund division within the parks & rec. department. So the money is kept separate and we are required to operate in the black, but the parks & rec director is my boss.

Agree that thle muni depreciation rule sucks- try paying for a clubhouse- the loan and the depreciation simultaneously. Ouch.

    PS- Hang in there Mel!!

    Michael,

At my prior municipal employer we were basically set up the same way as Steve is. The only difference was that we also had the tennis facility included in the "Golf and Tennis Enterprise Fund". It was just set up this way about two years ago and the biggest long-term challenge will be trying to fund major course projects.

    Thanks Gus and Michael,

Prognosis is great once my last round is done. Just lucky it was the one cancer they say is the best to get if you get one.

Also know about the family thing, I continued to look until our boy got into middle school, glad I stayed, our family couldn't have had a better 4 years of band and winter drum line in high school with our band family. Also learned after a short time, we live in a great neighborhood with great neighbors.

    Michael,

Sounds very familiar...Last September, after being Supt. here for 13 years, the parks director retired, and the mayor asked me to take the position. In the parks dept. we have the golf course, Aquatic Center, City Cemetery, Library grounds, and approx. 18 other parks, fields and turf areas. I told the mayor I was not going to give up the golf course, but it has been very, very busy and time consuming. I am making it only because I have good supervisors as in the parks and at the cemetery, plus a great assistant. It definitely is a lot more work and time, but if you have good staff, it is workable. Good luck.

5 Courses for us. We part of a Park and Rec system. Golf in an enterprise fund. We have to fund ourselves as well as some other areas. But, we also have non golf revenue streams in the enterprise fund. So, we all share in the ups and downs.
