The county I work for is discussing consolidating all the mechanics to one central location. In there mind this would increase efficiency and save money for the county. I understand the logic behind this but see it as a negative impact on the golf operation. The mechanics would work Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, leaving us with no early morning or weekend coverage. We would also be required to transport our equipment to a central shop for repairs. I have been given 10 days to respond to the consolidation report on why it would be detrimental to the golf operation and why my mechanic should not be included in the consolidation plan. I have a lot of the normal things such as, weekend coverage, ability to correct problems quickly, he does all the operator training and also all welding and fabrication. Just looking for other ideas to add to my report. Thanks for any help Dwayne Dillinger, CGCS Bell Nob Golf CourseDwayne Dillinger, CGCS

Dwayne - I know this is past your 10 day deadline and I hope that you got your way on this. We too are a county operated facility and until 2014, I went through what you are being faced with. It was not a good set up. It might work out for you at first if you have been with your mechanic awhile and he understands. The biggest problem I faced, which pretty much encompasses everything, the golf course mechanic I had at the time did not work for me. He officed in our shop but he was supervised by the county mechanic and superintendent. So if he did not feel like doing something or if he disagreed with me or if he just didn't want to do it, he didn't do it. So it turned into a situation where I was supposed to go to his supervisors and as you can imagine, it turned into a situation where I was "always complaining". It got to the point that I had to adjust my maintenance practices to accommodate the situation. And of course golf course mechanics do specific things sometimes that seem ridiculous to "normal" mechanic work so at times it was difficult to have support. For instance, the mechanic got to the point where he refused to set/work on reels after I topdressed because he thought it was stupid and made more work for him. So for me to have sharp reels, I had to stop topdressing. In 2014 all that changed and his assistant at that time is now my mechanic. He still has a hard time at times dealing with the fact that I am his boss and have control of his budget. It has taken quite awhile to adjust the other way. I'm sorry I didn't give you this info before. I just don't visit the site much anymore.
