Safety department decided all pieces of equipment have to have a fire extinguisher on them. Utility carts, mowers, tractors, etc.

How many others have to do this?

An extra $1,000+ that will have to be cut somewhere since they decide to let us know in the middle of a fiscal year and has to be done before next season.

I'm at a municipal course and we don't do it. It was looked at, but never got revisited.

Since it's in the middle of the season, I'd call it an unfunded mandate. So spend away. My opinion if my superiors want something done and still expect the same results, it falls under my expectation of unfunded mandate. They can manipulate and adjust numbers at the end of the fiscal year.

If the accounting department doesn't agree to the expense is coded, then it's time to have a meeting on how this is going to get done or find out what will not be completed.

    Good luck.

I put fire extinguishers on my rough mowers in the fall after one of the guys had to drive one into a pond to put out a leaf fire last year. Went to the clubhouse and got some of their old ones. They have certain codes they have to meet for the building that makes sure the extinguishers aren't out dated. They still work though so I used them. They worked great this year didn't even have any fires to put out this year due to their presence after having fires the last two year when none were present.

After hearing stories of a few issues, we are adding them when we can. We just haven't found a good spot to mount them on every piece of equipment. We would have to buy about 100 since that is how many pieces of equipment would need them. For now, all of our supervisor carts and mechanic vehicles have one. That equates to about 10. I'd love to see pictures of how you guys are mounting them.

When it comes to safety, the old adage "you can't put a price on safety" can be used. I continuously go over budget in that line item and have never been asked why. Because, again, you can't put a price on safety!! Especially when our workman's comp guy does his mock-OSHA shop inspections. Last visit he cost us over $3,500. But at the end of the day, you know, eye wash equipment and extension cords with no splices in them are pretty important to have around....

Just got all the extinguishers and brackets in, looking at mounting them after the holidays. I'm sure it is going to be fun finding a place to mount on some; may ask some from the safety department to come out and offer suggestions... I do understand the need for them but is unfortunate they couldn't give us more notice; really only affects us and the parks department.
City manager told the council he would resign his position if the city as a whole came in over budget in expenses this year, so you can imagine the emphasis on spending in each department, monthly meetings, etc.

I get a lot of silly questions and criticism from the accounting department in regards to spending, especially when you start your fiscal year July 1... why is your % diesel exp so high, its only September?

Maybe look outside the box when trying to mount them. instead of using the old strap method maybe a piece of irrigation pipe with a cap on the bottom can be mounted to the cart/machine. Maybe you can use the back of the seats, I know our greensmowers have a bracket for the owners manual tube to fit in maybe something in that area.
