Looking for some career advice from all Superintendents out there. I am currently active duty in the Air Force studying Turfgrass Management at Penn State. I get out in a year a three months, and will be moving with my wife to North Carolina. I will be applying to courses for an Assistant Sup. position and pursuing what would look best on an application. I have three routes to choose between, and need help with the decision. Option #1 I will have all my classes finished for an Associates degree, but will be missing the required internship so it will not be fully complete by then. Option #2 I plan on getting the Bachelors of Turfgrass, but it will be one year after I get out of the military before the classes are complete, so I would say in pursuit of a Bachelors on Resume. Option #3 To change my degree plan to the Basic Certificate and have it complete so atleast I have something to show for and pursue the Bachelors degree. I already have four years experience in the job from before joining the Air Force and I have a Associates in Construction Technology. I appreciate anybody taking the time to read this and helping me out with this. Thank you very Much.

    Option 4
Ask the person who hires you to call the first three months of your employment an internship.

Pay for the college credits, work the summer, complete your intern project or paper, hand it in, and start your career as an assistant at the course you just "interned" at.

I would think your future boss would be ok with this idea, and it would allow you to get your AS and be on your way to your BS.

    Good luck,
    Alden

Personally, I think few will care the difference in how it is stated on your application. If you feel the need to explain further, do so in cover letter and in person. I would recommend highlighting your experience. Best of luck!

First off, Thanks for your service! I too am a military veteran and would offer this, if you can work on the base you are currently stationed at part-time to fulfill the internship, it would be a win, win. I started my career at Fort Dix working just as a tractor operator part-time. Then attended Rutgers for 2 years during the off-season. I know they are often in need of QUALITY employees. It's a great start. Many of the staff I know are very willing to work with your hours as well. Best of luck.
