    Hey everyone,
At my course we are in the middle of building a new hole , and with the new hole we have re-rate the new hole for our score cards.

So what I am trying to figure out is how to measure the depth of a green? I have calculated the area of the green, which is 3,791.75 ft^2. But I can't seem to figure how i would go about getting the depth.

If someone could lead me in the right direction that be great. sorry ahead of time if this seems like a silly question. You don't know until you ask.

    Cheers,

    Jon

How far is it from front edge to back edge, in yards?

So your green depth is 18 and the middle is 9.

I'll be honest, I never worried about green depth or width until I was at a university golf course and we produced pin sheets for the teams, and had created a grid system for them so we always had 6 pins in front, middle and back and 6 right, middle, and left.

    Glad you got your answer.

The Mid-Atlantic Section of the PGA rated courses in MD back in the day (in exchange for getting handicap fees from every club). They used a laser on a tripod and a helper placed a reflector on the front edge of the green and then the back edge and averaged the two. They used the middle of the back tee and other tees, marked that spot and gave the club plaques to install. So distances on the card were to the middle of the green, meaning courses could play longer than the scorecard yardage, and frequently did when all the tee markers were back. Front and back hole locations balanced things out a bit. I see Mike Davis and the USGA folks stretching a tape down the middle of the green now during morning set-up and assume that is where the numbers on the pin sheet come from.
