Does anyone have any info on the pros and cons of gas and electric golf carts? We are looking to replace our fleet of electric with gas and I can' seem to find too much on the internet that isn't from an actual dealer. Our property has many severe hills and the electric really seem to struggle to go more than 18 holes. I personally want gas and the powers that be want an in depth report before we make this decision.

    Thanks for any help,

    Jason Pettus

Are you looking to own or lease? Are your customers hard on them ? Do you work on them in house or sub repairs out?

You kind of answered your own question with the electric carts having trouble going more than 18 holes. If you are buying I feel gas carts can last longer if they are not abused. I also feel average mechanics are better on gas then electric. Most pro's I think would rather have electric yet I have towed in more electric carts than gas carts. Gas carts have to be filled and that requires honest employees. Electric removes that temptation.

Thanks for the replies Mark. We are looking at both avenues, leasing and purchasing. The members and outside guests can be pretty rough on the carts at times just like any other property. Most of the major issues that arise will be contracted out. Small things we can handle in house. I am definitely more comfortable working on a gas than electric cart. We are a small semi-private club and I run all aspects of the golf operation so unfortunately I get a limited amount of time to be on the grounds and in the shop during the day.

We just made the conversion from electric to gas this past winter and everyone (including the golfers who can hear a squirrel fart in the next county) seem to be impressed. Again the actual maintenance on gas is easier and cheaper to do than electric, if something goes wrong with an electric cart it seem to always be an expensive part, including the batteries. While the gas carts have to be fueled occasionally you are not relying someone to make sure you plug them in every night. We previously ran a cart 18 holes then put it back on the charger, we only had 42 carts so it didn't take long to run out of charged vehicles. Now it goes 18, we rinse it off and send it back out for another 18 and if its early enough in the day another 9 after that. So we make the 35 carts we have now go a lot further. I will say I chose to lease Yamaha's new QuietTech carts which makes a difference as far as noise and being fuel injected we are averaging 5-5.5 rounds per gallon of gasoline or a little over 25 rounds per tank and we have a relatively "hilly" course. The drawback...you can't have all the neat geofence technology to keep golfers from driving up on green surrounds or out of native areas.
