I'm in need of a flowtronex expansion tank. My irrigation system was installed in 1994 the expansion tank has rusted out. The club does not want to install a new station yet so I'm looking for alternatives. I have had a local welding company check it out and they want 12000 to fabricate a new tank. I was hoping someone has dealt with this before or had a tank from when there system was updated. I have also talked to a regional irrigation company that can remove the tank, replace the clay valve and update my controller so a tank is not needed. They also want 12000. I know there is no cheep way out but I wanted to make sure I was not missing something.

Mine formed a pinhole leak last year and had to be removed. They do not recommend on using the tanks anymore due to safety issues. What we did is had the tank removed and had a 5 hp. submersible pump for pressure maintenance installed. Welders came in and fabricated piping onsite and luckily my pump controller was already set-up to program in another pump. I'll have to look at the cost but it was in the neighborhood of $10k.

I would abandon the tank by any means. An alternative to the tank would be an electronic butterfly valve. This is basically an electric Cla-Val. Still not as efficient as a VFD, but way safer than a tank.

But, if a tank is your only choice, look into a municipal water supply company such as http://www.hdswaterworks.com/.

Rust spots and pin holes were the end of our tank...the safety issue was enough to justify an upgrade. Ours got to the point that nobody wanted to go in there.

Be cautious repairing one that is rusting through-you don't know what the inside looks like. If you can get away from an expansion tank for 12K, that may be a bargain. We were in for 70K for a new station.

Thanks guys. I'm getting rid of the tank and going with a new valve going to be around $11,000 along with a new face plate on my controller.

Are expansion tanks used to help exert pressure on the system so the pump does not kick on every second? If so, how about a pressure tank used in home owners for there wells? They have some big ones out there.
