With the winter we had this past year, and the predictions they are having for this winter to be just as bad, is there anyone who lost bermuda worried about it happening again? Are there any steps you are taking to help in the care this fall? After seeding bermuda this summer and getting back our fairways, we overseeded with perennial rye this fall. We are hoping for the best.

    John,

Apply potash and quit mowing. My warm season fairways are as tall as they have ever been. I wouldn't worry, Mother Nature will do what she wants. Hopefully it will snow more than last winter. Good luck.

After nearly losing an entire green last winter I will be rethinking my formula for putting on blankets. Probably keep them on a little longer this year on the shady greens.

    Jeff,

What is the latest you would fertilize? I've been wanting to put down some and with sharing equipment, weather and other chores it's slipped to pretty late for us. We should still have some good weather left, and haven't had a frost yet.

    Mel,

Nice meeting you at last week's chapter delegates meeting. I would try and get the potash down before your first frost.

    Thanks,

10 day forecast might just let us do that. It has just been such a busy last couple of months with things, especially this month with high school band stuff.

It was good to meet you to, I always enjoy getting together with others, I learn so much from these gatherings.

    Thanks again.

Jeff, being new to Bermuda grass, what does potash do for it? Is it just a nitrogen substitute?

I just happened to see this thread title on the homepage when I was looking for something else.

In Sept., we did a Winter Solutions Roundtable webcast that is now available On Demand here:

    http://www.gcsaa.tv/webinars/education/view.php?id=260

Michelle DaCosta, Ph.D., reviewed the physiology of the plant then Sam Bauer talked about steps you may want to take to prepare your course for winter.

Not sure if the specifics you are seeking are included but they did a great job, it is free for members, and you can earn ed points as well.

Best of luck - freeze will be here tomorrow!

    Bryan,

Potash helps warm season turf store valuable carbohydrates in its root system. Warm season turf does this naturally in the fall but potash is suppose to speed the process up. These carbohydrates help warm season turf survive cold winters. It is an insurance policy if you can afford the application.
