We are just seeing the yellow in the buds of our forsythia bushes. Might not be considered quite blooming yet.

I'm a little surprised because of the cold January we had. This would be the third year in a row we are seeing some blooming (and 2015, I was out so I'm not sure about 2015)

    Some stats:
2016 Forsythia buds on Feb. 22
our Jan. temps were average (L= 22 H=43) and our Feb temps were +3 on avg. low +5 on the avg. high.

    2017 Forsythia buds Feb. 13
our avg. Jan temps. +6 above avg. low +4 avg. high Feb. was + 9 almost =10 above avg. low +11 above avg. high

    2018 Forsythia buds Feb 14
our avg. Jan temps -4 below avg. low and avg. high (43) so far Feb. -7 below avg. low and -8 below avg high and we're still seeing yellow in the buds.

Of course going back beyond 2016, I can't remember looking at the buds so closely, I wasn't even going to look at them today until my guys were doing some trimming around a couple of smaller bushes and noticed the yellow, so I checked my large bush and sure enough.

    We're located in SW MO.

I sure wasn't planning on pulling the trigger yet on pre-emergent apps.

I hopefully added a picture of the bud.

    Mel,
We had the coldest start to the year since records have been kept in Richmond (If I recall all the meteorologist hype correctly). we didn't get above freezing for something like 8 days. But, that is only since Jan. 1. The rest of the story was that we were incredibly mild in November and most of December. I had green Bermuda into the second and even the third week of November. Not totally out of the ordinary, but indicative of the mild temps. Soil temps just haven't had time to cool despite the frigid air temps. We have been seeing mid to upper 40's and even some low 50's (soil temp) these past few days/week. We are watching closely to time our fairy ring treatments.

Thanks! I'll try to look at it closer when some leaves pop out. Do they bloom at a similar time as forsythia?

When I get a chance I'll try to get a new picture I took today downloaded and posted here. Or if you want to look at my twitter feed, I just posted the picture from the 14th and a picture today of the bloom more exposed.

I did just google Cornus mas Corneilain Cherry and saw an image that sure as heck looks like our plant. But I also googled Forsythia and the branches look similar to our plant. I'll have to do more research. I was never a good plant person.

    Thanks!
