Anyone know of a remedy to getting rid of Cicada Killers. We have been using the tennis racket method but looking for a longer control. Any info would be great.

We don't have a major problem with them here and I dont konw a long term solution other than killing all your cicada's :)

We find their hole and shoot it full of talstar mixed at the label rate. Sometimes they come out and sometimes they dont, but they never return.

We had the problem on 3 of our greens. The only thing that I have found to work long term is Acephate an organophosphate foliar insecticide of moderate persistence with residual systemic activity of about 10-15 days at the recommended use rate. We didn't have any problems after the application.

I have a major problem with cicada killers. They are big and they are ugly. I know they dont sting. But now they are causing more problems. Big piles of soil from them borrowing are killing turf on fairways and green surrounds. in the spring the are in my bunkers and are very small but then they move out and GROW!!! What are guys spraying for them? I would think it would be difficult to go out with my sprayer and apply being that they borrow deep and are spread out all over the place.

I sprinkled granular Sevin around the burrows. They pick it up and take it down the hole. It didn't get rid of all of them but it did greatly reduce the population.

I know you mentioned not wanting to use your sprayer, however Acephate is the only product I found to work for us. Also it has a good residual of about 10-15 days at the recommended use rate. After the application we no longer had any burrowing issues. I've tried a number of synthetic pyrethroids and got no control. Good luck!

Depending on how many you have a back pack with sevin in it works well. Just stick the nozzle in the hole and flush it down into the ground. We only have a few bunkers that have them so it's not a big deal, but if you have alot this method may not be the best.

I'VE FOUND THE BEST WAY TO KILL THEM IS BY FLUSHING THEM OUT OF THEIR HOLES BEFORE THE MOWERS OR ROLLERS START TO MOW THE GREENS EARLY IN THE MORNING. I TAKE A 20 OZ. BOTTLE OF WATER AND TIP TOE ONTO THE PUTTING GREEN AND POUR THE WATER INTO THE HOLE. THEY WILL BE FLUSHED OUT OF THE HOLE AND FLY RIGHT INOT THE BOTTLE. THIS WILL TAKE YOU SEVERAL MORNING' S SINCE YOU CAN'T BE ON SEVERAL GREENS AT A TIME BUT YOU CAN TRAIN PEOPLE TO DO THIS PROCEDURE. I HAVE USED COKE BOTTTLES OR GATORADE, EITHER ONE WORK'S EVERY TIME. I HAVE KILLED PROBABLY AT LEAST 100 HORNETS THIS WAY.
    GOOD LUCK, DJ

'DEAD SURE II' by Certified Labs. Aerosol cans (15oz). I would lurk just in the distance and wait for one to enter the nest, once inside I spray the entry and the wasp as it exited..covering it with the white foam and within minutes the little buggar was dead. I had/have nests being burrowed in fescue and bermuda as well as bent and used this product on all 3 with great results/no turf damage.

These little devils have been a problem for the last couple years now. Digging into a few greens, around tee boxes, some in fwys and edge of bunkers. We've done hornet/wasp spray that seems to be affective but we'll have to buy in bulk to continue this process. Other than a bad mitten racket, what insecticides, if any, can take care of them? They haven't been harmful to any golfers, just their size and look scare them.

I have had good luck with the foaming insecticide sprays that are made for carpenter bees, but it will smoke turf. Catch them early in the am in the tunnels as they return for the night.

We have good luck treating individual holes with Delta dust. We have been unable to find anything to treat prior to emergence. Our cup changers treat them first thing every morning, less than ideal but we have reduced our damage substantially.

    Thanks Scott

Been going thru every 2-3 days with Sevin dust, seems to be doing the trick. Need to get a dust blower to get it more into the holes rather than just an the entrance but still having success. I did see a video of someone using ammonia, couple cups in the hole and cover it up. Might try this at the beginning of their next season. Thanks for the advice guys.
