After retiring 6 years ago and now coming back to train a new superintendent I have found the labor market has drastically changed. It is mind-boggling how no one even applies for positions at all levels we have. I have turned to programs where convicted offenders can work off their time up to 18 months and so far it is working out really well. Most of the offenders are not really any different from the labor force we have always attracted. One problem I do have is finding indoor work in inclimate weather as five or so outdoor workers in the shop tends to be unproductive and busy workers are usually happier than people who stand around. So I am looking for ideas , so far we are stepping range balls and building bird houses. As far as attendance goes if they don't show up they go to jail and the guys I have now have not missed a day.

I could find dozens of things that could be done in bad weather. Almost everything used for set up could use a good cleaning. Tees, trash cans, hazard markers. I generally have one or two guys that prefer to go out in the weather to fetch these things instead of hang out with the rest of the crew so I have them do a few holes at a time.
Then having a clean shop area is a must but a lot of areas get forgot like spiderwebs in the rafters or dust in vents and on shelving. Then there’s always one or two guys that seem to be good at equipment upkeep so getting them to clean and grease equipment assures it’s all ready to go out when the weather allows.
