As you probably know, next Wednesday September 23, is "Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day." Well, that reminds me of a story I have to tell. I apologize to those who have already heard it. Some of you, maybe several times already.
I had gone to GCSAA Headquarters in 1995 for a committee meeting. During one of the breaks I went into the book/merchandise store and bought for my then 5-year old son Michael a tee shirt. On the front was a golf green with a flag and flagstick and the caption below the green read: "Love Golf? Thank a Golf Course Superintendent!" I thought it was pretty cool.
A few weeks later we went to visit my parents. Michael happened to be wearing the shirt that day. My then 70--year old mother asks my son to show her his tee shirt. She reads it and says to him, "Oh, that's right Michael. Your Dad is a Golf Course Superintendent, isn't he?"
"No, Grandma. My Dad is a Golf Course Super Nintendo."
I couldn't stop laughing. Something only a kid could think to say.
GCSAA should start selling those shirts again. Michael now needs a Men's Large.
