    to: Superintendents, etc;
    Q/A: What are your thoughts of the change made by the Tour to leave August for May in 2019 and beyond?

    IMHO- there is some irony in the decision. The announcement was made @ Quail Hollow and wouldn't that be the time frame (May) that Keith and the crew would be contending with some dormant bermuda situations? That being said-would Quail Hollow be ready or in contention to host again? The greens' complexes are being heralded as difficult up and downs because of their current bermuda stands.

    Finally-I smell a hidden agenda on behalf of the Tour but that's my opinion. There's so much more to this decision yet the Tour said over and over that the Supt. would be contending with better agronomic situations in May? Now I ask you-how convenient that the Tour chose to be looking out for our behalf with such a major decision?

    We all know the PGA isn't going to do something that isn't in their own best interest (or at least they think is in their own best interest). Like you, I smell a rat. It wouldn't surprise me if the decision backfires on them, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

    My best guess is TV ratings and avoiding competition with College & Pro football. Allows the FEDEX CUP and Tour Chamionship to move up a bit....TV ratings=$$

    Didn't they say it was also a ratings issue having to do with NCAA and NFL ratings competition? My wife works at the local FOX affiliate in sales and ratings drive every media decision because ratings drive $$$$$. Sawgrass will have to go back to overseeding.

    I thought I read, but I was skimming the article, that part of the issue had to do with the Olympics also, of course that is only every 4 years.

    Look for QH to become a FedEx Cup site.

    I remember a local course years back that held a PGA tournament it late April down here I believe (NO) the PGA basically made all guidelines as to what they wanted with his greens (no questions ask). they required heavy overseeding to make sure they got the desired surface.
    I also remember that every year within a month after the tournament that their greens we like crap. the high rates of overseed basically kept the Bermuda out too long and he would have to struggle to get them back.

    I always wondered back then why the PGA would not have tournaments at course in their prime time of the year and not transitional periods. either moving that tournament back another 4-6 weeks would of made a big deference or even playing it in the fall.

    I guess their own agenda does not include what's best for the course though!

    Seems like this is the obvious reason. Having the Fed Ex Cup going on during the first few weeks of football season isn't helping their ratings. If they have everything done by Labor Day then the only competition during the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs is baseball and the US Open (tennis).

    Another rumor I have heard is a May date opens up some course possibilities further South...ie; Florida. I know of a course here that has aspirations.

    Fellas,

    Our local GCSAA association recently held a conference where we invited (I'm the conference committee chairman) Mr. Derek Sprague PGA Honorary President and past President. Derek was most recently at Liberty National and is now headed to TPC Sawgrass. He is a very superintendent friendly Golf Professional who at one time studied agronomy and held his pesticide license. He fully appreciates the challenges we face not only in tournament golf and those of who manage everyday courses. His presentation focused on "How to get along with your golf course superintendent" and he did a great job.

    The PGA and PGA Tour face a difficult scheduling task, in addition to the other major fall sports the Fed Ex, Ryder and Presidents Cups and now the Olympics, Mr. Sprague explained to us that this was a long term solution and definitely not related to any recent issues. While it opens up many of the great southern and transition zone golf courses it makes a lot of the classic and modern northern courses not practical due to a short spring growing season. They factored all that in and determined this to be the best path forward.

    One of many things that impressed me from Derek's presentation is that the PGA and the PGA Tour are dedicated to growing the game, providing accessibility and cooperation amongst all the industry partners. We as superintendents need to be fully vested in that partnership and work to make our industry strong. Think about it and be sure you are part of solution.
